RAILWAYS AND SNOW

Bulleid pacific 34017 ‘Ilfracombe’ is hard at work near Sevenoaks in January 1960. In 12 months time all this would be swept away as electric multiple units took over the services as part of the BR Modernisation Plan launched in 1955.

Black 5 4-6-0 no. 44727 is going well through Hellifield with a partially fitted goods train on the 26th January 1963. It appears that The Dales did not hve as much snow as most other areas by this time.

Photographers are out in force to witness 8F 2-8-0 no. 48327 tackle the climb from Gowhole towards Chinley with a heavy mineral train on 3rd Feb 1968. Just 6 months left for BR steam.

January 1963, and BR standard 4-6-0 no. 73093 (or at least that is what the photo notes say – as 093 was a Gloucester loco, I would doubt it) starts a stopping passenger service from a snowbound Farnborough station.

J36 0-6-0 no. 65224 passes Craigentinny, Edinburgh, with a goods train in Feb 1963; as a pair of BRCW type 2 diesels start a train out of the sidings.

An unidentified HST arrives at Bodmin Road station on 20th January 1985. Cornwall experienced rare (for the county) heavy snowfall during this time.

I ought to know this location, but until my brain clanks into action here is a Deltic in the snow of January 1979.

I do know this January 1979 location, it is Selby with another Deltic on a semi-fast service to York.
